Permafrost Story and World Explained

Updated 2026-10-14 · Last checked 2026-10-14 · Early Access

The published setting is a 2035 wasteland called the Permafrost, after a chain of disasters that ends with the Moon breaking apart. You are Rook, an engineer with rebuilding skills and little wilderness experience, pulled in by a radio signal from a friend who went silent.

I stopped at what the publisher page, the store description, and the October patch notes actually name. I am not writing a chapter walkthrough. Early Access quest text can change, and I have not verified map locations for each quest.

What the official pages state

Toplitz describes frozen cities, forests, caves and camps, plus survivors and faction-controlled territories. The dog companion scouts, warns of danger and carries supplies according to the official description.

Official Steam dev blogs identify Horizon as the shelter community founded by Robyn Cane, and Mule as a travelling merchant moving between settlements. These are named characters and places, not invented chapter titles.

Quest names in the launch patches

The 11 October patch names Hopes and Dreams and High Frequency, and says lost keys for Breaking the Radio Silence, The Way Home and Rise Above the Cold can be reclaimed from Anna or Skinwalker if missing from both inventory and reward chest. A save with the glitched recording already collected may remain stuck. A patch title is not proof that every quest blocker is solved.

For a walkthrough blocker, use the developer quest-workaround thread below. It discusses quest order, host-only steps in co-op and missing blueprint rewards. This page does not establish a final ending or a complete quest sequence.
